LoadRunner

Making a fleet move as one integrated robotic system.

LoadRunner robots sorting parcels as a coordinated swarm in the research hall.

The platform

Flexible robots at sorting-system speed.

LoadRunner is a multidisciplinary Fraunhofer IML platform for high-performance transport and sorting. Omnidirectional vehicles travel without fixed routes, coordinate their motion, and can couple to other vehicles or passive trailers.

Team achievement

A multidisciplinary robotic system.

LoadRunner joins mechanics, electronics, high-speed localization, control, communication, fleet coordination, logistics design, simulation, and experimental validation. The platform and its industrial progress are the result of a broad Fraunhofer IML team and its partners.

My contribution

Control-system architecture and integration.

I made central contributions across feedback control, state estimation, trajectory generation, and fleet orchestration. I also helped define implementation work, coordinate technical contributions, and integrate and validate the resulting system.

Architecture

From observation to coordinated motion.

01

Sense

Observe vehicle motion and environment.

02

Estimate

Maintain a reliable dynamic state.

03

Generate

Create feasible high-speed trajectories.

04

Control

Track motion under dynamic constraints.

05

Orchestrate

Coordinate vehicles as a fleet.

Field evidence

From prototype to operational trial.

A published system study modeled more than 10,000 parcels per hour with 60 vehicles. In 2023, LoadRunner was tested under realistic conditions at DPD's Cologne-Porz depot; in 2024, it received the euRobotics Technology Transfer Award.
